Early twentieth century Vizagapatam snuff box. c. 1900.

This fine example dates from the early part of the twentieth century and was produced in the Vizagapatam region of India. This kind of work is also known as Vishakhapatnam. From the early eighteenth century this region of India was a centre for wood and ivory work, where craftsmen produced elaborate furniture and novelty items specifically for western customers. This box is of very fine quality, the basic structure of sandalwood covered in a veneer of tortoiseshell and heightened with ivory decoration. The box has a sliding lid and it may be seen that one ivory peg is absent from the end section of ivory. To the top there is a tiny blemish to the dge of the tortoiseshell. This is mentioned only in the interests of complete accuracy.

This delightful and rare small example of Vizagapatam is in very good condition. It measures 8.5cm long, 4cm wide and stands 2.1cm high. (Measurements approximate) It shows wear appropriate to its age (See above). It has no significant damage or restoration.
