Fine antique ivory carving showing a Manticore.

This stunning ivory carving depicts a Manticore, a creature from Persian mythology with the body of a lion and the face of a man. Its passing into Western legend was aided by Pliny the elder, who included it in his translation of Aristotle. From this point it began to appear in the Bestiaries of the middle ages, from where it passed into Heraldry and Heraldic design. The age of this carving is unknown. It is certainly over a hundred years old, but may be considerably older. Such carvings were kept as protective talismans which were also associated with long life, strength and good fortune.

This rare and fascinating ivory carving is 9cm long, the base is 3cm wide. (Measurements approximate). It is in excellent condition, showing light wear appropriate to its age. It has no damage and no restoration.
