Late eighteenth century tortoiseshell box with miniature.

This beautiful Georgian tortoiseshell navette shaped box was produced at the end od the eighteenth century. It's form is similar to that of toothpick boxes of the period, but considerably larger. Set in the lid is a hand painted miniature after Andrew Plimer (1763 - 1837). Although the box is the appropriate period as is the painting, we do not believe it to be by the artist, but it is none the less by an experienced hand. The metal mounts of the box are beautifully constructed, but as is usual at this period bear no marks. The only fault to be found with this stunning quality box is it has a tendency to lift at the end when closed. (Easily remedied with the application of a small piece of tac.) The quality of the painted miniature to the lid is outstanding.

This exceptional late eighteenth century box is 11.3cm long, 5.7cm wide and stands 1.2cm high. (Measurements approximate). It is in excellent condition, bearing only light wear appropriate to its age and substance. It has no damage and no restoration.
