Details

A fine Meiji Period ivory netsuke showing Puppies at play.

This charming hand carved ivory netsuke was produced in Japan towards the end of the nineteenth century. It shows two puppies at play and is superbly detailed, the fur, paws and teeth clearly visible, each puppy having its own distinct character. The carver has successfully caught the essence of these little creatures whilst avoiding the sentimental view prevalent in later carvings produced for the Western market, leading to the reasonable conclusion that this netsuke was carved for the Japanese market.

This delightful hand carved Meiji Period ivory netsuke is 5cm long, 3cm at its highest point and 2cm deep. (Measuremeents approximate). It is in excellent condition, showing light wear appropriate to its age. It has no damage and no restoration.
