A mid - late nineteenth century Meiji Period carved wood okimono showing Raiden, God of Thunder.

This stunning quality hand carved wooden okimono was produced in Japan in the Meiji Period (1868 - 1912) probably around 1870. It shows Raiden, the Deity of Thunder, complete with his drum and playing the shamisen. Raiden's son is perched on his shoulder, while his Father performs a ritual dance. This okimono is of the finest quality and is signed to the base Kogetsu. Works by this Artist are in Museum collections across the world and this is one of the finest and best examples of his work.

   This outstanding hand carved okimono by Kogetsu stands 20 cm high, is 14cm at its widest point and 8 cm at its deepest. (Measurements approximate). It is in excellent condition, showing light wear appropriate to its age and substance. It has no damage and no restoration.
