Mid nineteenth century Viennese enamel box. c. 1860.

This superb box was enamelled in Vienna in the mid nineteenth century. Viennese enamel is regarded as some of the finest in the world and this example clearly supports the assertion. The top shows a "Fetes Gallants" in the manner of Watteau, Gallants and Ladies dancing and playing music. The sides of the box show a continuous scene of a multitude of figures in a neoclassical pastoral landscape. The base shows a neoclassical temple by a river. The interior of the box is enamelled in a delicate pink with tracery decoration. The box is set with silver mounts, with pin struck decoration and cased hinge.

This stunning example of some of the finest enamelling in the world is 6cm wide, 4.5cm deep and stands 2.5cm high. (Measurements approximate). It is in excellent condition, showing light wear appropriate to its age. It has no damage and no restoration.
