Round silver and enamel box. Marius Hammer (1847 - 1927)

Round silver and enamel box. Marius Hammer (1847 - 1927).

This outstanding silver and enamel box was made by Marius Hammer who worked from Bergen in Norway at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century. The standard of Hammer's enamelling was so high that he soon gained a worldwide reputation and in terms of quality his work has been compared to that of Karl Faberge. This example has gold floral inset decoration and a centre of white enamel that shows a fine opalescent quality when tilted in the light. The box is fully marked, showing the inverted hammer through an upper case 'M'.

This box, of exceptional quality, stands 2.5cm high and is 7cm in diameter. (Measurements approximate) It shows wear appropriate to its age (Minor denting to the base - no damage to the enamel) It has no damage and no restoration.
